About Megan

Hi, I'm Megan and I work as a freelance writer and theatre artist in Edinburgh. At the moment, I spend most of my time leading tours at The Real Mary King’s Close and assistant-directing youth theatre productions. Since 2018, I have also tutored English and History to SQA students online and in person. I was part of the year group that first sat exams under the new Scottish Curriculum for Excellence (2014/15 and 2015/16), so I am very familiar with the current structure of the English and History exam papers. I went on to study English and Modern History at the University of St. Andrews and graduated with First Class Honours in 2020. I am experienced in analysing, interpreting and responding to a range of different texts and would love to help you reach your study goals. Read below to find out more about why I became a tutor: ENGLISH I left school with an A1 in English at Higher and Advanced Higher. However, I started the year by consistently getting Cs in my essays and RUAE papers. Not for lack of trying, but because I struggled with time management and couldn’t organise my thoughts fast enough to get them down on paper. Fortunately, my neighbour showed me how to quickly plan and cherry-pick the information I needed to answer the questions, rather than attempt to write down everything I knew! After that, I felt much more relaxed and confident in what I was doing. English is a tricky subject for many people because, as you might have heard your teacher say already, “Anything goes”. They're (sort of) right. What they really mean is that you are free to use your style, creativity and voice to meet set marking criteria – which you still need to hit! English is all about being prepared, narrowing down information to make things easier for yourself, and knowing about analysis tricks that can help you to use (almost) any piece of evidence to answer the demands of a given question. These are all skills and techniques that I can teach you, which should make answering English questions a far more enjoyable experience and ultimately help you to improve in class. HISTORY I earned the 1st prize for History at Higher and Advanced Higher in my year. One, because I’m a massive history nerd (Horrible Histories used to be my favourite TV programme!); and two, because I recognised ***how important*** it was to organise the knowledge, analysis and evaluation I was taught in class so that it followed the source and essay question structures preferred by examiners. A lot of students end up falling short of the marks they deserve because they struggle to grasp and remember the correct way to lay out their information. In fairness, the process of plotting a History response is stricter and more to the point than what is expected in English. However, I can show you exactly how to understand the demands of any given question, interpret historical sources and plan and plot your points effectively so that your answers fully meet the criteria of any question.

Before starting lessons with a new student, I like to organise an informal (unpaid) discussion to hear about which areas of work you would like some extra help with. After that, what we do during sessions is completely dependent on your needs. We can: 1. Work through the syllabus bit by bit until you feel confident in what you are doing. 2. Mark essays and other written work together so that you can see exactly where your marks are coming from. 3. Practise timed papers to prepare you for the exam day. 4. Discuss and make study plans that suit your schedule. In my case, I struggled a lot with completing questions while writing under time pressure. Also, structuring my revision so that I learned enough but not so much that I burned out. These are problems that can be solved by developing your study technique and having a clear idea of how to approach specific writing, reading and analysis tasks – all of which I can help with. I use the SQA’s marking criteria as a guide and ask for feedback that students are getting from their teachers to determine which approach is best to help them move forward.
