About Alexandra
Hello! I am a guitar teacher with over 4 years of experience teaching more than 200 students of all ages and levels. My own musical background spans classical guitar, jazz, blues, rock, and folk, and this breadth allows me to teach across a very wide range of styles while bringing genuine expertise to each. I find that students who understand how their style of playing connects to and differs from others develop a richer and more flexible musicianship than those who receive purely style-specific instruction. I work with students from their very first guitar lesson through to advanced performance and music college preparation. I cover classical guitar technique in depth, including preparation for ABRSM and Trinity grade examinations, as well as electric and acoustic guitar in rock, pop, blues, jazz, and folk styles. I also teach music theory, ear training, improvisation, composition, and arranging to students who want to develop these dimensions of their musicianship. My lessons are welcoming and encouraging while being technically demanding — I hold high standards for every student but I communicate those standards in a way that motivates rather than discourages. I have worked with students from age 7 to age 65, and across that entire range, my experience is that the right combination of challenge, support, and genuine musical engagement produces progress that consistently surprises and delights both the student and those around them.

Guitar teaching requires addressing a greater diversity of styles, techniques, and musical contexts than almost any other instrument, because the guitar is at home in classical concert halls, jazz clubs, rock venues, folk sessions, and every other musical environment. My teaching reflects this diversity: I am comfortable and skilled across classical, acoustic fingerstyle, rock and pop, blues, jazz, and flamenco, and I draw on whichever styles are most relevant to each individual student's musical interests and goals. Technically, I begin with the foundations that are common to all guitar playing: hand position, posture, left-hand fretting technique, right-hand picking or strumming, and basic chord shapes. I address technique carefully and patiently from the beginning because technical problems that are allowed to become ingrained are far harder to correct later, and because good technique is not just about playing correctly — it is about playing without injury, which is a serious concern for guitarists who practice extensively. Theory is integrated into my teaching throughout: understanding how chords are constructed, how scales relate to keys, how rhythmic patterns work, and how musical structures are built gives students the conceptual tools to learn new music faster, to improvise, and to compose or arrange their own material. I cover music reading for students who want to develop it, and chord chart and tab reading for those working in styles where staff notation is less commonly used.
