About Jacob
I am a professional guitar player who has experience playing in rock bands, jazz groups, acoustic duos with singers. I have also worked extensively in musical theater orchestras over the past 4 years. This professional background combined with my years of teaching experience means that I am equipped to help students no matter their musical interests.
I also have an academic background, having obtained my Master of Music in Jazz Performance from the University of Toronto.

My specialty is jazz music and improvisation. That said, I can help you to read music on the guitar, understand music theory, demystify improvisation, learn music by ear, or better your guitar technique, just to name a few topics.
My methods are completely tailored to the student and their needs, so let me know what I can help with. For example, with a beginner student, I often take a song that they are familiar with and break it down so that we can get to playing along with your favorite recordings as soon as possible. Through simplifying the song and experiencing actually playing music, any exercises that follow are more meaningful because you can see how they can be applied to the actual act of playing music.
A more advanced student would be learning songs from the Great American Songbook and jazz composers and learning how to play them and developing a concept and voice in order to improvise on them.
