About John
I am a busy professional guitarist, working in London, around the country and abroad. I have been teaching the guitar since I graduated from music college in 2005. I'm from a musical family and have been performing in public for at least 30 years (since childhood) in one way or another. With a former musical education in lower brass, I performed during my youth as a soloist and ensemble player in many of the UK's famous concert halls (Royal Festival Hall, Bridgewater Hall etc.), and was a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. Over the last 20 years I have played as a sideman across Europe (and further afield) in Jazz clubs, concert venues and festivals and have been heard variously on TV, radio and film, both live and soundtracked. I have performed regularly at London's notable jazz clubs (Ronnie Scott's, The Jazz Cafe, 606 etc.) and at leading festivals such as The EFG London Jazz Festival and Love Supreme Festival. I have recorded 3 albums with Kongo Dia Ntotila, an Anglo-Congolese band I cofounded in 2010. Teaching naturally goes hand in hand with being a musician, and to be fully immersed in a musical life I believe it is a responsibility to share and pass on one's experience, as this is how art forms thrive.

I have a very versatile approach to teaching music with a strong sensitivity to a student's individual needs and learning style, owing to a multi-instrumental upbringing and varied training - both formal and informal. I can offer a structured and balanced approach to beginners or students with limited experience, or a highly specialised approach to advanced students looking to either refine or diversify. For example, that could be learning the language of improvisation in purely aural context, or studying/analysing rhythmic, harmonic and melodic concepts to deepen one's understanding. My background and professional experience playing both early and contemporary jazz, as well as Latin American and African music and also classical guitar, gives me a wide-reaching approach to technique and sound production on the instrument. I teach in my music room in SE London alongside my performing engagements, which offers some degree of flexibility in lesson times. I have experience of teaching other instruments, children and adults, and at beginner to advanced levels. I previously taught principal study guitar (jazz and popular), ensembles and improvisation at Leeds Conservatoire (2007-2011), and have taught within Higher Education, Further Education and Schools. I have an up-to-date DBS certificate and have undertaken the necessary safeguarding and 'Prevent' training to work within schools. Lessons can be 30 mins (young and beginner students) or 1 hour.

John is an exceptional teacher and one of the hidden gems of the British music scene.
He plays and teaches in a variety of styles and has a virtuosic and individual touch on the guitar. Alongside his guitar playing he is also a gifted trombonist and percussionist. Aswell as being a specialist in modern jazz and traditional jazz guitar styles, he is also a studied classical and African guitarist, with a great deal of experience running an African jazz crossover project.
I would highly recommend studying with John as he has a wealth of information and experience to share in a variety of areas in music. He has taught guitar for nearly 20 years.Great guitar teacher and wonderful musician, I was lucky enough to be his student. He is a fantastic person and very modest for his talent.
I would definitely recommend John to anyone.John is a dedicated musician with a wealth of knowledge about the guitar in early & contemporary jazz, Latin American and African music.
He is quick to spot a student's specific skills and aptitudes and where they need to develop.
He teaches from his home studio which is convenievelty located and easy to get to in South East London. There is a rumour his Dad used to live next to the Beatles but you'd have to ask him...If you want to learn guitar or improve your guitar skills to reach the new level I recommend you to study with John. He was my guitar teacher at Leeds College of Music and prepared me to get into the Jazz BA. Great person, patient and encouraging teacher.
