About Kieran

I am a professional guitarist and qualified music teacher with extensive experience as a soloist, accompanist, and band member across various genres including Rock, Soul, Funk, Folk, Latin, Reggae, Gypsy Jazz, Classical, and more. I play Lead Guitar for the band El Misti and we're about to release our second album in 2021. I have a Degree in Music Education from the international contemporary music awarding body, Rockschool, as well as Grade 8 Electric Guitar (Rockschool) and Grade 8 Classical Guitar (ABRSM), and an Audio Engineering Diploma (SAE Institute International). I have travelled the world extensively researching world music genres, especially in Latin America. During a 2.5yr journey through Latin America, I attended the School of Mariachi in Guadalajara, Mexico and performed with Cuban street band, Los Jubilados del Caribe, in Santiago de Cuba. I am originally from the musical city of Liverpool, UK, however in September 2020, I relocated to Mexico where I am continuing my research into Latin American music genres and sharing my knowledge with my students.

>> Interactive Notation App I have created custom courses for a wide range of songs and techniques, based on student requests, using a state-of-the-art interactive guitar notation app which allows you to follow the tablature interactively, slow down the audio, loop sections, etc. You will have access to these courses to practise independently as much as you like, forever. >> Studio Multitracks I have the original individual instrument multitracks for dozens of hit songs with full transcriptions so that we can learn directly from some of the best guitar and bass performances ever put to tape, as if you were in the control room listening to them. Including artists such as: David Bowie, The Doors, The Eagles, Nirvana, The Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Wonder, The Clash, The Beatles, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Police, REM, Queen, Creedence, Dire Straits, The White Stripes, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple, Muse... >> Audio Resources I create high-quality custom backing tracks at various speeds that are included in the interactive notation app. >> Visual Resources I create high-quality custom neck diagrams to help you visualise and internalise scale, chord and arpeggio shapes and improve your overall neck vision. >> Direct High-Quality Audio into Zoom I plug directly into Zoom via a Helix Floor Multi-FX pedal and a Shure microphone to ensure that you get nothing but the best quality audio experience and no distracting ambient noise from the room. >> Focusing on Your Goals So whether you're a beginner looking to take your first steps in learning guitar or an experienced guitarist looking to improve in particular areas, my approach is to build the lessons around your individual goals and interests. I can teach you a range of styles on Acoustic, Classical and Electric Guitar, and Bass. My aim is to give you the tools you need to be able to teach yourself by helping you hone the essential skills a musician needs: listening and reading skills, technical & improvisation skills, a varied rhythmic, melodic and harmonic palette, composition, audio workstation and recording literacy. We can work towards an exam board syllabus such as Rockschool, ABRSM or Trinity. If you'd like to perform your own choice of repertoire for exam pieces, sheet music and backing tracks can be created once the tracks have been authorised by the exam board. I also work with songwriters who are looking to develop their songs and/or record demos. I can help with arrangement, creating rhythm section tracks, backing vocals, and mixing and mastering options. In our first free trial session, we can discuss your goals and work out how we can go about achieving them, so get in touch to arrange a time. I look forward to meeting you.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I was surrounded by music as a child and was always fascinated by how it worked. I would play with cassette tapes and vinyls, try to mimic sounds and whistle the melodies. I learned to play guitar by spending time and jamming with my uncle and his friends, who introduced me to a wide range of genres including gypsy jazz, reggae and Latin.
  • Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Buena Vista Social Club, Django Reinhardt, Dub Reggae, Silvio Rodriguez, David Gilmour, …
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I deliver courses in a range specific skills or genres such as funk, triads, or the CAGED system, but I find that the most enlightening to students is a more holistic approach of studying their favourite repertoire in detail and exposing the moving parts and memorable patterns within the music, the mastery of the visualisation of the guitar neck, music's similarity to language and speech patterns, and understanding the emotional qualities of intervals, chords, scales and modes so that you can dial into and evoke those emotions at will.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I think music can be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be, no matter what instrument you play. Some people can learn through pure innate instinct and be world famous. Other find mastery via a more analytical approach. Or a mix of both. Each to their own.
  • What are your keys to success?

Regular practice. Learning at lower tempos to get the correct form and muscle memory. Play what you love, and love what you play.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

John Lennon for direct, no nonsense political satire and hilarious nonsense. Silvio Rodriguez to explain what the hell some of his lyrics mean. Lee Scratch Perry to show me some dub mix tricks.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

One day I decided to quit my job, sell or give away lots of my stuff and fly to Cuba on a one-way ticket to learn Latin guitar styles. I ended up meeting one of my heroes, Eliades Ochoa, at the Casa de la Trova in Satiago de Cuba, and playing and singing live with a full mariachi band in a plaza in Guadalajara, Mexico, amongst other musical adventures
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I am largely self-taught but the handful of formal guitar lessons I attended in the past were full of vague and boring drills that had no context and I would forget most stuff within 5 minutes of leaving the lesson and/or not be motivated to practice it. As a teacher, I ensure we are learning the material you love and that will get you towards your goals. I provide full transcriptions of everything I teach you, accessible forever via an interactive notation app sync'd to Youtube videos which you can loop, slow down and jam along with my custom backing tracks. The visual element is also often neglected in music education but I provide full neck diagrams so that you can visualise scale, triad and arpeggio patterns on the neck.
