About Harrison Everett

I’ve been playing guitar since I was about 7, and this bad habit has stuck ever since. I perform a mixture of music that I’ve written, others’ original projects, and partially/totally improvised music also. I have a degree in jazz from Trinity Laban. I spend a lot of time writing songs, composing, researching and practicing new ways to approach my instrument and interpret sounds overall.

As well as teaching, I work as a performing musician and recording artist, playing across London's jazz and indie scene.

Here are some projects and people I’ve worked with over the last couple of years:

Everett - Sam Norris Quintet - Zhenya Strigalev/Radhika De Saram - Hermeto Pascoal - National Youth Jazz Orchestra - Alan Barnes - Windy City Weatherbirds - Petty Theft - Becky Alice Quartet - Shan & The Shine - Thread Snake Records - Leo Walrus - Bernadette Lara

Hi, I'm Harrison Dolphin, a guitarist and songwriter based in London! I'm available to teach all ages and abilities, between 30-90min lessons.

I have a teaching style that is informal and responsive to you, shaped around your development as a musician - even if you don't call yourself a musician! Whether we're talking about sense of rhythm, developing the right technique for you, improvisation, playing with others, learning a new piece, new ways to listen to or think about music, or ways to develop your own writing; we can break down the concepts into manageable chunks and start to think about them as ultimately simple things.

I think it's important to design lessons around your interests and what you really want to work on, and I've had too many teachers myself who just prescribe instructions without relating enough of it back to what it was I really wanted to do at the time. That said, I have a few areas of specialism that, among other topics, I'd be happy to go in-depth with and apply to your own approach and learning style:

Guitar technique - I can teach you the way of playing the guitar that I have found over years of study that allows the hands to have the most control and efficiency in both single-note playing and counterpoint. It goes all the way from the most fundamental motions, to extended fretting techiques that I've developed for my own music.

Harmony, melody, improvisation -

I have a comprehensive understanding of the different ways that harmony and rhythm is understood across different cultures of music, and I've developed my own concept of understanding harmony that doesn't use chord symbols in the traditional sense but instead aims to describe harmonies, melodies and even rhythms by their interval content.

These ideas can expand our improvisational and compositional palette and give us new ways to hear and think about sounds.
This is useful at any level, but you might get the most out of it while already having a strong knowledge of conventional theory.

Songwriting -

Apart from spending my time researching often really complicated and niche elements of the aspects of music and this instrument, I've also written lots of songs and lyrics that don't have to have anything to do with that!

Sometimes you just need to express something, and in my experience having somebody to bounce ideas off and suggest things while writing a song makes the process so much more enjoyable, especially if you're a bit of an overthinker like me!
