About Malachy
I'm from London, and I'm studying Biochemistry at the University of Edinburgh. I have played the piano since the age of 5, and also play the saxophone, clarinet and guitar. I have completed three Grade 8s and my piano dipABRSM diploma, meaning I can offer first-hand advice on passing ABRSM exams and exam technique. I love all sorts of genres of music, and have focused on repertoire by the likes of Chopin, Debussy and Ravel in my classical playing, and Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyler and Thelonius Monk in my jazz studies. As a musician in London I played in prestigious venues such as the Bull's Head Barnes, Nell's Jazz and Blues, Southbank Center and Soho Jazz After Dark. As well as this, I have won numerous competitions, including the King's Piano Competition and the Battersea Piano Competition.

I offer versatile, engaging and enjoyable lessons, tailored to the student and their interests. We will cover technique, note-reading and ear training with an emphasis on an all round musical education, to allow the student to enjoy themselves and facilitate their own exploration of their musical inspirations. As a seasoned jazz pianist, we can cover transcribing, improvisation and composing, for piano and wider ensembles, as well as dealing with live performance and jamming etiquette, building up a strong repertoire and versatility on the instrument.

Perfect! Malachy’ s teaching style is great - he is friendly, enthusiastic, passionate and passes on his incredible depth of musical skill and knowledge in a digestible and approachable way. I was really pleased with what we covered in my first jazz piano lesson.
