  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always loved English class, ever since I was a small girl. I devour books and think the language itself is fascinating. I first became interested in private tutoring when I started teaching and some students wanted extra practice. I found it was such a great way to get to tailor my lessons!
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

As a teacher in the USA, I taught History and English, but had a real passion for English. I love that it never "ends" - there is always something else to learn, read, write, etc.! Some of my favorite topics include grammar, sentence structure, and literary devices.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had several amazing teachers that inspired me to become a teacher myself. In particular, I had an amazing English teacher in high school who really inspired my love of language.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To be a good tutor I think it is important to understand where your students are at in their learning journey, and where they want to go. With any teaching it's so important to be flexible, prepared, kind, and to make things fun and exciting!
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One thing I have always loved is music, and I found that lyrics can be so beautiful to read and decode. I still love to use music when learning about allegories, mood, tone, and other literary devices.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

English is a hard language, even for native speakers! As someone who grew up learning American English, I occasionally have to remind myself to change spellings, etc. to fit with NZ English. But I love the challenge!
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I absolutely love to teach, especially the humanities! I have wanted to be a teacher since I was a young girl, and always envisioned myself teaching English. I would say it is absolutely my passion!
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions) ?

For me (and my students) no two lessons are the same! I spend time to make sure I am tailoring lessons to suit EXACTLY your needs and help you grow in your ability to speak, read, write, and listen to English effectively.
