About Phil
My obsession with music production started as a kid, rigging up tape recorders from jumble sales to achieve my first primitive multi-track recordings. That early curiosity led to a lifetime of building studios, starting with my first proper setup—a VestaFire MR30 4-track—and eventually filling my bedroom with an Allen & Heath System 8 console and a Fostex A80. Over the years, I’ve worked on everything from Tascam cassette 8-tracks and 2-inch tape to ADATs, Atari ST sequencing, and modern digital recording.
Because I’ve lived through every stage of this technological evolution, I have a deep-seated preference for tactile, analogue workflows over 'mixing in the box.' I maintain a dedicated studio space where I continue to apply the production techniques of the pioneers, keeping the history of recorded sound alive in my work. I bring that hardware-focused, heritage-informed mindset to my tuition, helping you bridge the gap between vintage engineering principles and modern digital production.

With over 30 years of experience as a studio producer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist, I teach music production as a professional craft rather than a theoretical exercise. My methodology is practical and hands-on, utilising my own analogue-equipped garden studio and Logic Pro to help you master the signal chain, mixing, and arrangement. I work with students of all ages and levels, from beginners wanting to get their first track down to intermediate producers looking to refine their sound. Lessons typically last 60 to 90 minutes to ensure we have time to dive deep into your projects. I focus on developing your critical listening skills and technical confidence, ensuring you walk away from every session with a clearer understanding of how to translate your creative ideas into high-quality, professional recordings. Like with my instrument tuition, it's about UNLOCKING YOUR EARS!
