About René
- What kind of experience do you have? I have been teaching singing for 9 years now, both in private 1-1 sessions and in groups. Each summer I teach at The Music Makers summer music courses in Nottingham aimed at children aged 5-15. Through my operatic work I often teach singing workshops and more focused opera workshops. In these we explore the characters, themes and music of a specific opera, update it and see how the opera is still relevant to modern life, and then teaching some extracts of the work to the group. I have extensive experience in choral singing having been a Canterbury Cathedral chorister, a member of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, a scholar at St Barnabas' Cathedral Nottingham and having conducted and directed Viva Voce Chamber Choir. - Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate? I have a DBS Certificate with a Date of Issue: 14 June 2018. - Where and with whom did you train? Whilst in Nottingham I trained with Richard Howarth and at the Royal Academy of Music and now privately with international tenor, Ryland Davies and in demand vocal coach, Audrey Hyland. Whilst training for my LRAM singing teacher status I studied with Glenville Hargreaves and had vocal health lectures from specialists in a Harley Street clinic.

I am a friendly, experienced musician and professional singer who enjoys teaching. The ukulele is an instrument that provides a great introduction to music, particularly for young learners and is a useful platform before taking on other more demanding instruments. Plus it's plenty of fun! - Which subject(s) do you teach? Classical singing, violin, theory and ukulele. For ukulele I only teach beginners and this is a great starter instrument, particularly for children aged 5+ to get them started with basic musicianship before moving onto an instrument that is more technically demanding. It is primarily an accompanying instrument for songs and encourages plenty of singing. An ideal step before singing or guitar lessons. - Tell me about your qualifications. I am currently only taking on pupils to teach at my home in Penge (Bromley), London. This would be most suitable for pupils living in Penge, Crystal Palace, Sydenham, Anerley, Beckenham, Forest Hill and Elmers End. - When are you available? I am very flexible with my teaching schedule and am available for teaching during the days for those with flexible jobs and between 4pm and 7pm most evenings. Do contact me to discuss availability and timetabling regular lessons. - Which ages and levels do you teach? On ukulele I teach ages 5+ and usually complete beginners. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for? I prepare my students for ABRSM or Trinity exams. This all depends on the student's wishes and goals and is something we would discuss in our approach to our lessons. - Do you have a personal message for students? The most important thing is to enjoy your music!
