I am a dedicated, enthusiastic and inspiring teacher. I have acquired a varied teaching experience from directing in-home private lessons for students of the ages of 3-75, to teaching at specialist schools and universities. My most recent position was Piano Instructor at New York University Steinhardt School where I taught private lessons to undergraduate music majors. Having taught students of varying ages and abilities, I am able to adapt my teaching style in consideration to specific students needs, learning processes and personal goals. I always encourage my students to attain their personal best whether it be for a career in the arts or simply to engage in music as a hobby.
I have a very clear teaching philosophy which has enabled my students to have numerous successes over the years and a 100% pass rate record in their ABRSM exams. Within my private lessons, my main priority is to enable the student to become an independent learner. I use the term ‘independent learner’ for specific methods I prioritise within my teaching. As an example, for beginner students, I provide them with the necessary tools and knowledge they need in order to start reading music immediately. This ability allows the student to have enjoyment in learning on their own outside of the lessons which better aids their development. Through the ability to read, along with an awareness of harmony and theory; the student is able to progress in the right way and avoid frustration further down the line.
It is important to have a balance between what ‘should’ be learned in any curriculum and what ‘should’ be learned to gain a rounded musical education. I have always prized myself on my ability to apportion my time accordingly to tick both boxes, which is something I consider to be key in maintaining interest and enjoyment alongside syllabus and technical progress.
As a performer, I give concerts regularly as a soloist and chamber musician. I have found this professional performing experience to be beneficial to my teaching, as I believe it is important for my students to have a first-hand reference point within the profession.
