About Vanessa
I have a Master's degree in English and am currently working on a Master's in Library and Information Science, so I have plenty of experience with the writing process! In my current position as a professional writing tutor, I enjoy helping writers reach the "Aha!" moment, when they finally understand their instructor's prompt or how to apply learn how to analyze in more depth. Knowing a writer feels more confident about how to approach their draft means I am doing my job. I also find it is important to demystify the writing process by reassuring writers that it is not linear. This allows writers to feel less restricted and makes it easier for them to get started. Finally, I make sure to emphasize that writing, like most things, is a skill, and there are no bad writers. The more we read and write, the more we build our writing skills. Becoming a stronger writer is always possible!

I focus on college-level writing, but also work with high school students. My lessons are student-centered, focused on strengthening writers' current projects, but can also work on helping writers' develop their writing skills independent of their current assignments. I think what makes me a unique tutor is that I provide in-depth feedback to ensure writers learn new skills and can apply them on their own because, as one of my English professors used to say, "My goal is to teach myself out of a job!"
