About Ellis
Hello! my name is Ellis (pronouns: they/them), and I am a 4th year Psychology PhD student, with a background working as a teaching assistant and tutor for undergraduate and graduate social science courses. I am really passionate about teaching and learning with students about research statistics, methods, and social science theory.
I did my undergraduate (4 years) and masters degree (2 years) in psychology, so I am very experienced in initially struggling with difficult course material- like research statistics - and then trying my best to figure out how to engage in a way that aligns with how I learn best. In addition to my experience as a student, I have worked in different settings where I've had opportunities to apply my knowledge of statistics in a real-life way. I then get to incorporate these interesting real-life applications into my teaching when I am instructing statistics tutorials at the university, or tutoring students in individual or small group sessions.

I try my best to provide students with theoretical backing, opportunities for practical application, along with critical and creative approaches to engaging in course material so that students feel capable in making informed decisions about their own work and learning. I value peer-learning, collaboration, critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and opportunities to apply knowledge as part of my teaching philosophy.
I strive to facilitate deeper-level knowledge among my students so that they can effectively process, organize, and store what they’ve learned in ways that will make it useful for them to apply in the future. I have garnered a diverse toolbox of teaching strategies that I typically employ to facilitate deep-level knowledge, including but not limited to: active listening, communication skills, giving feedback, and checking for student understanding by asking open-ended questions that require higher order thinking skills.
