About Karen
ABOUT ME: I’m a qualified and experienced teacher concerned with helping my students achieve their learning goals. I hold a teaching degree (a B.Ed hons degree which was a four year course). I’m approachable and friendly I have considerable experience across all age ranges from Primary to adults and I've helped many students achieve examination success and improvement. I have been a tutoring alongside classroom teaching since I qualified as a teacher in 1986. I pride myself in assisting all my students to gain the best results by providing the highest standard of tuition the following subject areas:
1. English key stages one to three.
2. Entrance examination preparation - all types
3. Dyslexia Screening Tests (DST-J and DST-S) and tuition specifically for dyslexic students. I am qualified to administer the Dyslexia Screening Tests from age 5 to 18 years.
4. EFL (English as a Foreign Language) - all examination types including IELTS I also am qualified to teach English as a foreign language with the highly sought after RSA Cert TEFLA qualification.

My lessons are usually for an hour.
MY APPROACH TO TUTORING: I think it is most important for the student to feel relaxed with the tutor and so I try to create a happy non-intimidating, hard working atmosphere. I usually start with an informal chat to see what exactly the student wants to achieve, then it is usual for me to do a simple assessment to highlight areas that need improvement. Following that I create an individual scheme of work for us to follow which I regularly review. I always plan my lessons very thoroughly and like to discuss progress at regular intervals. I strive to make learning a pleasure, I do this by using my great creativity to make lessons interesting, fun and engaging, for example by implementing music, movement, or the student’s own interests into the lesson. I’m exceedingly patient, kind and thorough, with a wealth of teaching experience. I’m particularly skilled at teaching children who are non-starters in reading, dyslexic students. My methods produce fast results. I’m very skilled at unearthing any under lying problems that may inhibit learning and discovering any holes in a student’s knowledge. I prepare lessons consistently and thoroughly and regularly provide feedback to parents.
MY TEACHING EXPERIENCE: Initially I worked in primary schools and then I created my highly successful tuition centre for ages five to nineteen. Here I teach key stages one to four in English, entrance examinations and study skills. I also teach after school individual tuition. Other part time teaching positions include teaching study skills to degree students part-time at De Montfort University and work for Global LT inc. There I tutored those whose first language is not English from primary age students to high flying business men who required rapid improvement in business English.
