About Tom
Hello :)
I'm Tomos — a qualified Maths teacher based in Bristol, UK. I offer tutoring for students based in the UK and worldwide.
I don't think tutoring should feel like an extension of the school day. Instead, it should be a relaxed and structured space where we can focus on particular topics, work through problems together and get to the bottom of any misconceptions.
Having worked as a classroom teacher, I know how difficult it can be to give every student the time and attention needed to fully address their questions. Tutoring gives us that space, allowing me to tailor each session to your individual needs and learning style.
Before moving into teaching, I worked as a Mechanical Engineer. I try to bring this experience into my teaching wherever possible, using real-life examples to make Maths more interesting and show how the things you're learning can be applied beyond the classroom.
Whether you're looking to build confidence, improve your grades or prepare for an upcoming exam, I'll work with you to help you make progress towards your goals.

My approach is to make Maths feel more manageable by identifying exactly where you are struggling and building your confidence from there.
Before our first session, I'll send you a short questionnaire so I can learn more about you, your goals and the areas you'd like to work on. I'll then use this to plan a few sessions around your specific needs.
In a typical 60 minute lesson:
We'll start by looking at the topic or skill we're working on.
I'll take you through some examples, explaining my approach and the reasoning behind each step.
You'll then have a go yourself, initially with my guidance and then independently.
We'll review your work together, identify any mistakes or misunderstandings, and make sure you understand how to approach similar questions in the future.
I want sessions to be relaxed and enjoyable, but you'll need to be actively involved. The aim isn't simply to get the right answer — it's to develop your understanding and confidence so that you can tackle problems independently.
Online tutoring:
I use Microsoft OneNote as our shared workspace, allowing us to work through questions together in real time. For the best experience, you'll need a tablet and stylus (or another setup that allows you to write naturally on the shared page).
I teach online students in the UK and internationally, including students following GCSE, IGCSE and IB curricula.
Thank you for considering me as a maths tutor! Please don't hesitate to get in contact if you have any questions or queries.

As a qualified physics teacher, I fully recommend Tom as a skilled educator.
Tom has a genuine interest in mathematics, which is evident in his teaching and indeed during discussions of any and all things scientific.
His strength in the subject comes from his desire for a deep and complete understanding of a given topic, and this is a great advantage to his students.
If you wish to boost your ability, understanding, and enjoyment of mathematics and its related disciplines, look no further - you have found your guide!I know Tom from training as a maths teacher with him.
