About Johanna
Hello! My name is Jo and I am a qualified Primary Teacher with a passion for helping children develop confidence and enjoyment in maths.
I chose to become a teacher because I love seeing children achieve things they once thought were difficult. Maths can sometimes feel challenging or overwhelming, but with the right support and encouragement, every child can make progress and experience success. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is watching a pupil's confidence grow as they begin to understand new concepts and believe in their own abilities.
As a tutor, I aim to create a positive, supportive learning environment where children feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I understand that every child learns differently, so I adapt my teaching to suit each individual learner, helping them progress at their own pace while building strong mathematical foundations.
Whether your child needs extra support, is preparing for SATs, or simply wants to improve their confidence and attainment in maths, I am committed to helping them reach their full potential and develop a positive attitude towards learning.

I am a qualified Primary Teacher offering personalised Maths tuition for children across the primary age range, including preparation for KS1 and KS2 SATs. Lessons are available both online and in person across Essex.
My Approach to Tutoring
I believe every child can succeed in maths when teaching is tailored to their individual needs and learning style. My lessons are designed to build confidence, strengthen understanding and develop problem-solving skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.
I begin by identifying each pupil's strengths and areas for development, then create lessons that are engaging, challenging and suited to their current level. I use a variety of teaching strategies, practical examples and visual resources to help children develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts rather than simply memorising procedures.
Techniques and Teaching Methodology
Personalised learning plans based on individual needs and goals
Clear, step-by-step explanations to build understanding and confidence
Use of visual aids, practical methods and interactive activities
Regular retrieval practice to reinforce key skills and knowledge
SATs-focused preparation, including reasoning and problem-solving techniques
Ongoing assessment and feedback to monitor progress and adapt lessons accordingly
My aim is to help children develop both mathematical fluency and confidence, enabling them to apply their skills independently.
Typical Length of a Lesson
Lessons are typically 60 minutes long, although 45-minute sessions can be arranged for younger children if preferred. Each lesson includes a review of previous learning, targeted teaching of new concepts, guided practice and independent application.
Qualifications and Experience
I am a fully qualified Primary Teacher with experience teaching and supporting children across the primary curriculum. I have worked with pupils of varying abilities, including those requiring additional support as well as those seeking greater challenge. My experience includes preparing children for KS1 and KS2 SATs and helping pupils build confidence in maths both in and out of the classroom.
