About Mark
I love to share examples that allow you to connect the science we're learning about to your everyday life, or in other cases, how wonderfully weird and non-everyday it can get.
Ask any (science) question, and I will try to answer.
You will actually understand what you're learning, not just rote learn some sentences to say (although we will do a bit of that too), and this makes science so much more enjoyable.
Come prepared to think and get smarter.

Understanding and performing well in science is about three things:
- knowledge
- understanding
- exam skills
Knowledge is built from recall. We will recall key facts each lesson and students will be directed to practice recall tasks outside of lesson time.
Understanding is developed within the student as they observe and make sense of the world. Tutoring uniquely allows the student to explain their understanding to an expert who carefully decides which bits of understanding, knowledge and language to correct or improve on. My years of experience allow me to spot misconceptions that might otherwise go unnoticed. To cement understanding, students need to apply what they think they understand to new situations - my depth of understanding and skill with questioning allow me to facilitate this by responding to the student's natural curiosity and extend it. Students report enjoyment of lessons precisely because learning is weaved into what feels like an interesting chat about pop science.
Exam skill comes from practice with coaching. The student will learn the techniques I used to prepare for exams as I coach them through not only answering questions but also learning from mistakes. The techniques I used allowed me to attain a mean score of 96% across 5 A-levels and to support an A-level class to improve by 3 grades each on average in one year when I took over a class as they entered year 13.
Great progress comes from the student being committed out of the lesson too and I value the cooperation of student and parent in identifying and addressing challenges to independent study.
Tutors do not exist in isolation and I would want to work meaningfully alongside the school curriculum. If I can support students to understand what they are currently doing in school they will gain confidence more rapidly and get more out of their classroom lessons and homework.
Lessons are online and will typically follow the following structure:
- 10 minutes recall questions based on what has been covered previously, this may involve calculation, drawing, speaking and writing.
- 10 minutes check in on homework completed
- 15 minutes (interactive) explanation of new content
- 20 minutes of the student practicing choice exam-style questions with coaching
- 5 summary and setting homework
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Mark was my A-Level physics teacher and his teaching style is clear, patient, and genuinely engaging. He has a real ability to break down complex concepts and make them accessible without dumbing them down. One thing that really stood out was when he offered extra lessons during half term giving up his own time to make sure we were fully prepared and confident before we had major exams. I would highly recommend him to any student looking for a Physics tutor who is knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely invested in helping you succeed.
