I have experience teaching Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9) and adapting lessons to meet the needs of students with Special Educational Needs (SEN). My lessons are typically one hour long and tailored to each student's learning style. Before qualifying as a teacher, I worked as a one-to-one teaching assistant in SEN schools, where I supported students with a range of additional needs.
Teaching techniques to promote learning:
• Dual-Coded Instruction:
Combined explicit written instructions with clear visual examples to reduce cognitive load.
• Cognitive Chunking:
Segmented multi-step practical processes into manageable, "bite-sized" instructional blocks to prevent overwhelming learners. For example, using the "I Do, We Do, You Do" framework to scaffold the creation of complex designs.
• Sequencing learning:
Strategically extended complex practical tasks across multiple lessons, so students have the opportunity to experiment with new materials and refine techniques.
• Multi-Sensory Modelling:
I used a mix of live demonstrations and video tutorials to support SEND students. Explicitly modelling the metacognitive thinking behind the process and demonstrating real-time problem-solving strategies.
