About Rémy

I'm Rémy, a junior at Regis High School in New York City. I have a genuine passion for economics, international policy, Latin, English literature, and writing — pursuing all of them outside of the classroom.
Outside the class, I'm a NY State Public Forum Debate Champion, I informally led a team that placed 10th in North America in the World Economics Cup, led a team in the Wharton Global High School Investment Competition among thousands of teams worldwide, and wrote a research essay on central bank digital currencies for a Harvard economics competition. These are challenges I enjoy — reading about a topic, forming a clear view, and defending it well. I think it's the key to an informed citizen and describes my aspirations best.
I also tutor and mentor younger students, which I find equally rewarding. I spent a full year working one-on-one with an 11-year-old through PISTE, and I volunteer as a rhetoric and public speaking mentor for middle schoolers through REACH.
Outside of all that, I read a lot — literature, economics, politics — and I’ve recently taken a liking to French philosophers such as Camus and psychoanalysis writers such as Lacan. Latin is a particular passion; I've worked through Ovid, Catullus, and others, and I find the language foundational to English and other languages.
In the future, I hope to study abroad and pursue my interests in economic policy in researching and providing solutions that need it most, and I find teaching what I love a great way to spend my time until then.

English

I tutor middle and high schoolers in English, writing, rhetoric, Latin, and proofreading. I'm a junior at Regis High School in New York — a school known for its academic rigor — so I’ve come to understand what it means to want to constantly improve.
As a high schooler, I‘m nowhere near far removed from material I would be teaching students. In most cases, I’m more relatable, personable, and approachable than someone older. College tutors have plenty of knowledge; what I offer is a certain relatability that tends to make students more comfortable asking the questions they'd otherwise be embarrassed to ask.
I spent a full year doing one-on-one tutoring two days a week with an 11-year-old through a volunteer network, and I’ve worked with middle schoolers on rhetoric and public speaking as a mentor and instructor for the past two years. I'm also a NY State Public Forum Debate Champion, which means I've had to formulate, defend, and write about arguments in high-pressure rounds — skills that carry over to writing and reading.
For writing, my process usually starts with a clear thesis and foundational outline — most writing problems are thinking problems. Typically essays start with deep literature analysis. For rhetoric, I work through logos, pathos, and ethos and help students spot weak reasoning, starting with their own. For Latin, I’ve translated real texts from Ovid, Cicero, Catullus, and other Latin prose and poetry.
I've read broadly in English literature and follow politics and world affairs closely.
If any of the above strikes some interest, let me know!
