About Sandy
I am a lifelong educator, spending 35 years in high school English classrooms, working with all students, from Honors students to those struggling to graduate. I also taught English 101 and 102 at two community colleges. I have had success in helping students who previously had little or no confidence in their abilities to analyze literature and to write to gain confidence and skill. I taught high school journalism, as well, and several of my students (and our publications) won multiple individual and publication honors and awards at the national level. Because of the success of my students, I was named the first high school Instructional Coach in our district in Ohio and then was the first ELA Content Specialist at the district level in Tempe, Arizona, teaching English teachers in our seven other high schools how to approach new standards and new assessments. I have a strong ability to analyze where students struggle and tailor my approach to meet their specific needs.

As a Tutor, I help students gain the skills they need to be proficient readers, writers, and speakers. I also provide instruction and tips to increase ACT and SAT scores, particularly with how to approach reading texts. Lessons are for all levels of high school and junior college students. I can work with your current assignments to teach you how to dig in and understand literature or informational text better, learn how to write literary analyses, informative or persuasive essays, or even prepare for speech and debate. I am able to supplement grammar and usage lessons as well. My goal is not to "fix" an essay for you, but to guide you with how to approach your own reading and writing to grow your skills. I use a growth mindset approach and gradual release teaching method to help you improve your skill and your confidence in your skills. As an ELA high school teacher, my students had the highest standardized test scores in our district (two large high schools). I also have experience teaching professional development to teachers to help improve their instructional strategies and their understanding of the impact of student behaviors and trauma on student performance.
