About Colleen

Learning is never about perfection, only about progress. All of us are learning each and every day. Some of us have specific learning goals while others enjoy the journey of learning about our life and the people and experiences that surround us every day. My greatest joy in life has always been teaching and having the opportunity to share my knowledge and experience with those that want to learn. Teaching is never a job; it's a calling and a gift.
I have often told my students that I have learned more about life and living than I ever taught them.

Learning Philosophy - All have the right to learn. I use Bloom's taxonomy to initially identify my students' abilities and desire for learning. Proper grammar is stressed to ensure confidence in speaking and writing. Each lesson incorporates the four C's: Culture, Communication, Connection, and Comparison.
Lesson Plan - Review last lesson - What is an adjective's job in a sentence? What is the proper order of adjectives in English? When are commas used and when are they unnecessary?
State objective for current session - Review and Rewrite paragraphs from a short story being read as a group. Take turns reading a short story which includes CULTURAL components different from learners' current experiences. Example: Who can tell me what symbol the color "white" might mean in this story - purity, marriage, freedom, good. How many of you know what "red" symbolizes in China? What about the cowboy wearing the "black" hat?
Know, Pair, Share opportunity.
COMMUNICATION - While one learner is reading a passage, encourage others to highlight or annotate each adjective along with the noun being modified. Are any of these adjectives unclear, unfamiliar? Speak with your shoulder partner about the different connotation and context of these words, examples.
CONNECTION - Make connections with others while working through the "job" of adjectives in English. How are adjectives used in Spanish as opposed to English? Where are they physically located in the sentence? How do the Asian cultures use adjectives? What difference in their tone and volume indicate different meanings? Make connections with other languages through those with whom you are learning.
COMPARE - While making the connections, expand upon the comparisons. Use a VENN to identify what is similar and what is not. How does this exercise help you?
Finally, individually rewrite one to two paragraphs from the story using cultural language to communicate the story through new connections you have made!
Read to rest of group for discussion - praise and growth!
As a tutor, I connect well with my students. I learn about their struggles and challenges as well as their goals and needs. I am also willing to share my learning path. We are all learning!
I taught high school English in the public sector. I have tutored students through success with the TSI preparatory exam for college. I have tutored students for SAT preparation.
I am currently tutoring ESL adults preparing to take the GED exam as well as adults preparing for US citizenship. I also substitute at three local elementary schools where needed.
