About Vicente
Vicente Marcano was born in 1964, Caracas, Venezuela. Since 1989 he has been a professor and
researcher at the University of Los Andes in adaptive biology, evolutionary chemistry, ecological
microbiology and astrobiology with an outstanding international career; director of the Laboratory of
Evolutionary Biology and Extreme Organisms of the Center for Atmospheric and Space Research and of
the “Vicente Marcano” Experimental Biological Station, attending to projects on biodiversity in the
neotropics and the impact of climate change; research associate at NASA Ames Center with Dr. Chris
McKay; general coordinator and person in charge of the ULA University Probe Rocket Institutional
Project and the National Vector Development Project for the Positioning of Nanosatellites in Low Orbit,
with the historic achievement of having placed for the first time an aerospace artifact in the Venezuelan
supradjacent outer space. His research results are evidenced in more than 150 widely endorsed and
indexed scientific publications, in 5 specialized books and in 30 book chapters, among which Introduction
to the Study of the Lichens from the Venezuelan Andes stands out. (Koeltz Scientific Books, Stuttgart,
1994); Astrobiology: From the first molecules to the appearance of the synapse (Publications Council of
the University of Los Andes, Merida, 2003); The genus Ramalina Ach. (Ascomycota, Lecanoromycetes,
Ramalinaceae) in northern South America (Magnolia Press, Auckland, 2021); Evolution and destiny of
life in the Guiana shield: A natural history based on the contributions of explorers and naturalists from the
17th century to the present day (CSIC, Madrid, 2022), and important articles such as An experimental

approach to production of peptide-like compounds in the early terrestrial planets (Planetary and Space
Science, Pergamon, 2001); Growth of a lower eukaryote in non-aromatic hydrocarbon media > C12 and
its exobiological significance (Planetary and Space Science, Pergamon 2002); Acyclic hydrocarbon
environments > n-C18 on the early terrestrial planets (Planetary and Space Science, Elsevier. 2003);
Pyrolysis of phosphorylated molecules and survivability limits during the atmospheric passage in Earth-
like planets (Planetary and Space Science, Elsevier, 2004); UV Resistance of a lower eukaryote grown in
hydrocarbon media to ultraviolet radiation (Origins of Life and Evolution of the Biospheres, Springer
Verlag, 2006); Microbiology of opal formations in quartzite caves from the Venezuelan Guayana (Revista
de la Sociedad Española de Espeleología y Ciencias del Karst, 2020) He has been founder of laboratories,
groups, programs, societies and scientific foundations in Venezuela and Latin America. He has received
countless distinctions and awards. For his studies on neotropical biodiversity of lichens, he was awarded
the National Science Prize, Mention Natural Sciences (1995); For his theory on the origin and evolution
of life in hydrocarbon environments, discoveries on the synthesis of prebiotic molecules under simulated
conditions of the primitive earth, and studies on the cellular biology of extreme organisms, he was
awarded the Academy of Sciences Prize. Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Venezuela (2004)
and the National Science Prize, Mention Natural Sciences (2004)
