I am a passionate and fun Spanish Professor. I love languages and cultures. I am fluent in English and Spanish, proficient in Portuguese and possess a basic level of Japanese. My classes are geared toward students who want to become fluent in Spanish, either in day-to-day Spanish or Business Spanish, and also knowledgeable about the culture of some Spanish-speaking countries, the grammar and structure of the language. My classes begin with a warm-up. Then comes the introduction of the class (let it be the functions to apply in everyday life, a grammar point, a business niche market, or many more). This is followed by the body of the class. The body of the class is intertwined with receptive activities (listening, reading, or watching) and productive activities (oral conversation, writing, and/or acting), this is a hands-on approach. At the end, there is a closure, it is an activity in which the student has the opportunity to produce information in order to sink in the information taught throughout the class. The most important factor for me is the students’ learning, motivation, and engagement. I make my best effort for the students to say “wow” at the end of my class. I try to make my classes fun, this makes the students feel good about the class and increases their performance. I utilize the first five minutes of my classes for introducing my students to the Hispanic culture, interweaving the culture with grammar points we have studied or that we are going to see and with associations of the student’s cultures and previous knowledge in order to make a link. Additionally, I am committed to integrating technology in my classes; utilizing websites (for example: thinklink.com) to dynamically present a culture class. I also utilize technology for other purposes: to show videos (YouTube), to make a group competition (kahoot.com), to teach an inverted class, to reinforce the speaking skill with an individual class.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I developed an interest in my chosen field when I started teaching General and Business English in a company while I was pursuing my Bachelor´s degree in Business Management.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

I love cultures and languages and how they are intertwined. Languages are supported by their culture. Languages say a lot about a specific culture, its traditions and history.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I love it when the students are engaged and amazed when I teach them about the language, traditions, culture and history. But what I like best is when students are surprised with their fast learning.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

There have been 3 teachers that have blown my mind throughout my professional career. My Professor of Ethics during my Bachelor's degree and my Business Management Professor during my Masters's degree in Management. And the last one is the Hispanic Theater Professor during my Master of Arts in Spanish career.

First, my Professor of Ethics, because he showed us ethics with a practical approach. He took us to an orphanage house during Christmas. Then, the students brought a present for each one of the children there. We wore costumes and celebrated Christmas Eve with the children.

Second, my Professor of Management, because he utilized assorted teaching approaches and made us think from a different perspective. He gave us a business case, then, he would say: tell me the community's perspective, the nonprofit perspective, the political perspective, the student's perspective and finally your perspective about this case.

And last, my Professor of Hispanic Theater, as we the students participated in an immigration theater play that he wrote. First, he introduced us to the Hispanic literature that supported the play. Then, he took us, the graduate students, on a bus field trip to the border with Mexico. There, we the students were able to see the real-life experiences that illegal immigrants go through when they immigrate to the US. First, we stopped at the cemetery in the city of Tucson Arizona. There, we went to see the area for the immigrants ́graves. We drove across the cemetery with beautiful green grass on both sides. As soon as we got to the immigrants' area, there was no grass, just dry desert earth. Then, we approached the tombs: these tombs did not have an epitaph, no name, no date of birth, no date of death; they were unknown in life, and not even forgotten because they were never known. From these lessons, I learned to be humble and to stay grounded, smile at life even during my hardest times, and be thankful to be experiencing this twilight, what we called life in this paradise.
  • What are your keys to success?

Success is a result of years of dedication in a specific field where you have dedicated time and effort to perfection. Success arrives when there is a rewarding feeling of how your professional career is providing contentment and added value to yourself and society. Together with that added value comes the money.

    Thank you for reading!
