About Kai
Hi, my name is Kai Gou, and I’m a graduate student at the University of Waterloo, majoring in Actuarial Science and Statistics. I have a strong passion for mathematics and enjoy helping others understand and appreciate it. With a solid academic background and clear communication skills, I aim to make math more accessible and less intimidating for students. I focus on building strong fundamentals, explaining concepts step by step, and using real-life examples to make learning more engaging. As a tutor, my approach is centered on clarity, patience, and adaptability. I believe that every student learns differently, so I begin by understanding their current level, learning style, and goals. My teaching methodology involves breaking complex concepts into manageable parts, using real-life examples, and encouraging active participation through guided problem-solving.
A typical lesson plan starts with a brief review of previous material to reinforce understanding. I then introduce the new topic using simple explanations, visual aids when helpful, and step-by-step examples. After that, the student practices with my support, and we finish with a recap and short takeaway exercise to reinforce learning.
What sets me apart is my strong mathematical foundation from my graduate studies in Actuarial Science and Statistics at the University of Waterloo, combined with my ability to explain abstract ideas in a practical, engaging way. I also prioritize building confidence, not just performance.
My lessons are ideal for high school and university students, especially those taking courses in algebra, calculus, statistics, or introductory actuarial science. Whether the student needs help catching up or wants to deepen their understanding, I tailor each session to meet their needs.
