About Dr Monika
You are planning to apply for a PhD but have no clue where to start? Your doctoral funding is coming to an end, and you are panicking, wondering how to make your Postdoc application stand out among hundreds of others? You are planning to submit a grant proposal for a UK or EU funding scheme, but the application seems daunting and you don’t quite know what they are looking for? Or perhaps you feel alone in preparing for an interview for an academic position?
I’ve got you. With a PhD in Language Sciences, I too felt overwhelmed when entering the fierce academic job market ten years ago. Yet, I completed a PhD in Paris, secured a prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Fellowship in Poland and was awarded a British Academy Grant, alongside a full-time lectureship in the UK. The secret is not to have the best CV, but to understand what grant providers are looking for and tailor a compelling narrative about your career progression.
As part of a university research committee, I regularly review grant applications and participate in sift panels for doctoral awards, MSCA, Leverhulme and British Academy postdocs. I also act as a point of contact, advising Research Directors on mentoring successful candidates, and am involved in a consortium of nine European universities on a Horizon Europe grant. I have experience advising on grant applications across SHAPE disciplines, including psychology, media, film studies, creative practice, history, philosophy, linguistics, translation and communication studies. I currently supervise a PhD candidate who, with my help, managed to secure competitive UK funding.
As an active researcher, I have given over 50 presentations at international conferences across 15 countries, building a successful methodology for public speaking that I now share with my students.
