Firstly and always, watch as much cricket as possible and attend to the techniques of the best players. Watching at the ground is better than watching on TV. a method of training and improving your hand-eye coordination for that is a key to both batting and fielding. Throwing a small rubber ball at a wall and catching it, using both left and right hand to throw and to catch, is cheap, portable and endlessly repeatable.
Thirdly, learn the Laws of Cricket because the way to play is found there, by which I mean: The playing area, the pitch, the stumps, the creases (lines) at each end of the pitch, and the playing equipment are all described in detail in the Laws. The Laws outline that the ball must be bowled not thrown; the bowler must bowl with both feet landing within a prescribed zone; the batsman may hit the ball for runs; runs are scored by the two batsmen running end to end of the pitch; a batsman can be dismissed in one of ten ways; and various other events and situations in the game are handled in certain ways.
Fourthly, find people to play with. At 7 I terrorised my little sister with my fast bowling in a small yard. At 9 I played at school. Any half-dozen able bodies can play some kind of cricket.
