I believe self-learning is the best style of learning, not in the sense of making students do all the work, but by slowly pushing them to reach the right conclusions on their own terms with small nudges. I assign specially catered assignments where each problem is multi-part, and I guarantee that if the student can solve the problem on their own, then they can understand the entire theorem.
