About Rhys
I'm an experienced pianist and teacher with a Bachelor of Music degree from Canterbury Christ Church University, where Piano Performance was my primary study and I tailored my training specifically towards teaching, because this has always been the path I wanted to take. I am also a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.
Piano has been central to my life since childhood, and over more than a decade of teaching I've developed an approach that is as much shaped by my own journey as a musician as by my formal training. I understand what progress feels like from the inside, and I bring that understanding into every lesson and will help you achieve a beautiful tone and natural playing style.
My teaching is thoughtful and personalised. Every student is different, in ability, in confidence, in what they want from the instrument, and lessons are built around you rather than around a fixed syllabus. I use a carefully chosen set of materials and methods that build strong foundations in technique, musicality, and theory, but the direction we take is always guided by your goals.
Exams are available if that's what you're working towards, and I'm proud to have helped students achieve distinctions. But for many of my students, a grade is a milestone on a longer journey. The real goal is becoming a confident, independent musician who genuinely enjoys playing.
Lessons are relaxed, patient, and unhurried. Whether you're a complete beginner, returning to the piano after years away, or looking to develop at a more advanced level, all are welcome here.
The first lesson is free, a chance to meet, have a conversation about what you're looking for, and see if we're a good fit.

All are welcome, whether you are a beginner, someone returning to the piano after years away, or a motivated secondary school student looking to develop.
My approach is centred on building confident, independent musicians. I focus on strong technical foundations alongside genuine musical understanding, and introduce theory where it naturally supports the music rather than treating it as a separate subject. Learning should feel coherent and enjoyable, not fragmented.
I take a proactive approach to teaching, helping students develop skills in a well-rounded and integrated way rather than reacting to mistakes as they arise.
Every lesson is tailored to the individual. Whether you're working towards exams or simply want to enjoy playing and grow at your own pace, the lessons follow you.
Lessons are typically 60 minutes, with 45 minute sessions available if preferred.

Rhys has been a great tutor for me - I came back to piano as a double bass player, and he made the whole process really easy and enjoyable. He’s super patient, explains things clearly, and always adapts lessons to where you’re at.
I’ve definitely gained confidence thanks to him. Would 100% recommend, especially if you’re getting back into piano :)))I took piano lessons as a child but nothing stuck. I just couldn’t engage with my piano teacher’s teaching style and she actually made me feel quite hassled. In the end, I just gave up on the whole thing. So, when I came to Rhys for lessons in my mid-30s, having not so much as played a note in two decades, my level of ability was very low. As were my expectations for what I could hope to achieve. But Rhys has been very patient and kind. He has demystified a lot of things for me and I’ve actually been amazed at what I’ve been able to pick up under his guidance.
I'm Bill, I came to Rhys as an adult learner when starting out on my Piano journey two years ago and I've made a lot of progress from no experience at all to achieving distinctions in all of my exams !! I'm now working through Grade 3 and he's been helpful every step of the way !!
I started my piano lessons at 7; however, I stopped after a year because I couldn't find a teacher who was engaging. Until I met Rhys 4 years ago, as an adult learner, I can say that Rhys is very patient and thorough in his lessons. He spends time tailoring every class and has helped me improve.
