About Joel Dsouza
My professional achievements include development of a scaled-down version of the widely used protein estimation method , the Bradford assay, to a 96 well ELISA Plate format, which has been adopted by my fellow colleagues at Aurigene, due to the numerous advantages involved in terms of increase in throughput of the assay, lowering the volumes of expensive Bradford reagent used which had been tested repeatedly, each time providing reproducible, accurate and linear standard curves having an R2 value of 0.99. I have also carried out successful standardization of an ELISA kit which had inconsistencies pertaining to key working parameters, in the supplied information brochure, for the detection of Prostate specific antigen (PSA) in prostate cancer cell lines in response to drug treatment in order to obtain reproducible results, both of which were achieved during my tenure at Aurigene Discovery Technologies Ltd.
At present, I am currently engaged as a Jr. Executive at Yashraj Biotech Ltd, as part of the Recombinant DNA Technology department, involved in the process of purification of recombinant proteins and biomarkers involved for diagnostic purposes. Previously, I held the position of research assistant and had been involved in immunoassay development for detection of ailments pertaining to hormonal imbalances prevalent in many different diseases using paper-based lateral flow immunoassay platforms at Vidcare innovations Pvt LTD Pune. I have also successfully designed and executed a proof-of-concept experiment in order to verify the formation of an immunoassay sandwich prior to the development of paper-based sensors in 3D matrices during my tenure as a research assistant at Vidcare innovations Pvt LTD Pune.
My previous assignment was as a trainee at Aurigene Discovery Technologies located in Hyderabad, as part of my Masters in Engineering curriculum. My tenure at Aurigene Discovery Technologies involved studies on modulation of the hippocampus pathway in cancer using small molecular inhibitors and the resulting changes in expression of the various biomarkers chosen. Cancer and the accompanying therapeutics being a highly evolving discipline and focus of research in the field of bioscience, has captured my interest Drawbacks in cancer therapy include the late detection of cancer which subsequently leads to multiple organ failure once the malignancy and angiogenesis enable metastasis of the cancer from one organ to multiple other organ systems. Personally the avenues of research in cancer immunotherapy are of great excitement. Biomarker discovery and cancer immunotherapy represent a two- pronged approach in advancement of cancer therapeutics by giving birth to more targeted and specific therapies, as well as providing early detection of malignancy, be it through detection of a novel cancer marker, regardless of its biomolecular origin, maybe a mutant hormone receptor or an increase in the levels of a molecule involved in the process of angiogenesis.
