About Nathan
Educated in both Germany and the UK, I am a graduate of the Royal College of Music and Harrow School. I provide lessons and coaching for all levels and am able to teach in English, German and Korean. I am a dynamic and enthusiastic teacher who values a well-rounded musical education. I believe that a student who is happy outside of music will do better in their musical studies. There are two types of people: those who say “I wish I played an instrument” and those who say “I wish I continued with my instrument”. My aim is to make this world a more musical place one student at a time! Education and Performance History: I attended the Royal College of Music as a Neville Wathen Scholar from 2013-2018, graduating with an Upper Second BMus in Violin Performance. I studied under Professor Radu Blidar between 2013-2015 and Professor Felix Andrievsky, legendary pedagogue and co-founder of the Yehudi Menuhin School, between 2015-2018. At the end of my studies, I was elected as the Students’ Union President for the 2017-2018 academic year. Prior to university, I was awarded a full scholarship to Harrow School and attended as a Music Scholar from Year 9 to Year 13 where I studied with Dimitar Burov, Head of Strings in the Music Department. During secondary school, I obtained 10 A*/A GCSEs and 2 A grades at A/AS-level. Before moving to England, I lived in Germany where I attended various schools in Berlin and Bonn. My violin teachers during this time included Julia Prishepenko and Michael Sekler (Concert Master of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and final student of the legendary David Oistrakh). Most notably, I became one of the youngest students to ever be accepted into Hans Eisler Hochschule, the leading music conservatoire in Germany. There, I studied under Professor Johannes Kittel and Professor Ulf Wallin until age 13. I have been successful at many international music competitions throughout my academic career which include: • Steinway Piano Competition Berlin, 2003 - 3rd Place • Berlin Jugendmusiziert, 2005 - 1st Place • Queen Sophie Charlotte International Violin Competition, 2006 - 2nd Place • Vladigerov International Violin Competition, 2013 - 3rd Place Throughout my music career, I have been able to perform as some of the most coveted international venues which include Berlin Philharmonie; Konzerthaus Berlin; St John’s Smith Square; the Royal Festival Hall; the Royal Albert Hall; the KBS Concert Hall in Seoul and other venues internationally. Teaching History: I have been a violin tutor since 2014 and have been teaching piano and viola to students by request. I also prepare students for Music Scholarship auditions and admission interviews, namely to Harrow School but also to other public and private schools in the UK. I have experience teaching students of all ages and levels beginning as young as 5 years old up to mature students who learn for leisure. I have taught more than 40 students with consistent success in ABRSM Grade exams, competitions and most recently a successful Music Scholarship to Harrow School. Until recently, I was a peripatetic music teacher at Papplewick School in Ascot specialising in teaching scholarship students. In addition to private teaching, I am an experienced chamber music coach and do private violin coaching for orchestral auditions, exam preparation or competitions by special request. My students enjoy performing and do well in competitions – highlights include participating in a gala concert at Cadogan Hall in Sloane Square. I have known Nathan for over 2 years and in that time he has produced remarkable results with his students. He is an enthusiastic teacher and a good example to other tutors in the business. I have learned a lot from him which has helped me with my own tutoring.
I highly recommend Nathan to parents who are looking for rigorous violin lessons. I know that Nathan holds his students to very high standards but values enjoyment in class and appreciation for music equally as much.
As an experienced coach and accomplished musician himself, Nathan always gives practical advice for students looking to pursue music full time. His students are often invited to watch him in concert and he is always keen for his students to get involved in playing in concerts or recitals of their own. He also goes to support his students at every concert or examination when he can.
As a fellow tutor, I cannot recommend him highly enough.I have the pleasure of working with Nathan in our string quartet. Nathan truly knows how to communicate in an engaging way and passes on information and knowledge clearly. Nathan particularly is good at giving constructive criticism whilst continuing to build ones confidence. He brings the right balance of fun and serious needed to learn in an engaged and effective way. He is also very good with children and he’d always be the first teacher I’d recommend.
