About Sam
I am an experienced teacher with wide ranging musical knowledge and interests. I've performed in a variety of settings (orchestras, choirs, folk bands, community groups) and have worked in music education for 8 years. I am an oboist and composer, currently working towards a PhD in Composition. Music education is very important to me, and I want as many people to experience the joy of music in as many ways as possible.

I try to expand students view on what music can be, as well as help them understand difficult concepts in music. My lessons range from 30 mins to an hour, depending on the student. I mostly teach GCSE and A-Level Music, but can also help with Grades 1-8 Music Theory and university admissions. I am proficient in Sibelius, Musescore, Logic, and other composition software.
In composition, I take an "idea first" approach, helping them get over the blank page nerves. This allows them to easily structure the music through storytelling, and allowing the music to develop organically. With music history and analysis, I try to find what the student is interested in with each piece, and then build on their knowledge from that point. I find that this results in more engaged students who gain a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of music theory and history.
I gained by BA in Music from Oxford Unversity, and an MMus in Composition from Royal Holloway. I have been teaching since 2017, and formally worked at The Purcell School for Young Musicians. I currently work at ABRSM, so have a wide knowledge of their qualifications and regulations. I am also pursuing a PhD in Music Composition at King's College, London
