I believe in the more holistic approach of building the student from the ground up by training the ear to hear the sound they would like to produce. My students learn to explore their own personality and develop their own brand of music-making.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I focus mainly on violin, but I am also a very experienced chamber musician.
I can be a practise supervisor both online and offline.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have been playing the violin since I was a young boy growing up in South Africa. My first teacher was very inspiring and constantly gave me challenges to strive for, and she pushed me to complete ABRSM Grade 8 within 4 years of learning the instrument. Since then, music has been an integral part of my life, and I pursued a Master of Music from the Royal College of Music after completing my Honours degree at the South African College of Music, University of Cape Town. I have also completed the ABRSM Advanced Certificate as well as the violin performance Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music. I have won numerous competitions as a chamber musician and have performed as concerto soloist in Europe and South Africa.

- How much do you charge?

Online Skype lessons are charged at £40 per hour or £25 for half an hour.
If I teach outside of my studio, my rate is £50 an hour and £30 for half an hour.
If you travel to me, I offer a 20% discount.

- Where do you teach?

You are welcome to my studio in East Dulwich, but I am happy to travel to the surrounding areas such as Dulwich Village, Herne Hill, Peckham, Camberwell, Forest Hill, and Brixton, etc.

- When are you available?

I have a flexible schedule, so I am open to suggestions.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

All ages and levels.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I can offer preparation for any of the graded ABRSM and Trinity examinations up to Licentiate and Fellowship level, but my main focus is for my student to improve as both violinist and musician, and not just ticking the right boxes for examiners.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I can offer Skype or Google Hangout videocall lessons, but of course I cannot teach a complete beginner in this fashion. Videocall lessons are for students that have already covered the basics.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

My approach to playing the violin is focused on the creation of sound. Bowed instruments are not fretted nor do they have mechanisms that produce the right notes or the right sound if you strike/press correctly. It is simply just horsehair tugging a string to vibrate the soundbox, and how that string vibrates determines how you will sound. So the focus of my teaching is to train the ear to determine what the right sound is and how to achieve that beautiful sound.
