About Miklas

I am a politics researcher currently based at the University of Edinburgh, where I recently completed my PhD. Besides that, I also hold a Bachelor in Politics and History from Kiel University, Germany and a Master in East Asian Politics from the University of Edinburgh, having achieved distinction (or distinction equivalent) in both. At university, I have been teaching for over three years now, working on different courses mostly with 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students, but also with postgraduate students on one course. I have received consistently excellent feedback from my students and was nominated for the university's teaching awards twice. My main strength is engaging students by taking them seriously and working to polish and refine their thinking skills rather than force-feeding them information. Consequently, students have often expressed that I helped them develop an interest in topics they had not really thought about before, which for me is the most ideal learning outcome. Of course, I am also well aware of grading and other performance metrics and having provided extensive feedback on students' written work previously, I am able to pinpoint the most pressing issues in a student's work and can use that insight for step-by-step improvement. This can work for short-term learning to pass a particular exam, but with more long-term tutoring it most importantly helps to build academic fundamentals and thus improve outcomes far more broadly. I teach A-levels, GCSE, Highers or Advanced Highers in politics, history, sociology or other social science and study-skill related subjects. For university students (both undergraduate and postgraduate), I can tutor on modern history, East Asian history, international relations, security, political theory, gender studies and other political science topics. In general, I can also help with research design, methodology, exam preparation, essay writing and broader critical thinking, writing and reading skills. The specific content of my lessons depends entirely on the needs and goals of individual students and I believe very firmly in the merit of such a personalised approach.

Every learner is different and has their specific circumstances, which is why my teaching philosophy revolves around getting to know students and their goals to tailor my approach to lessons accordingly. At the same time, I believe that creating a relaxed and familiar environment is key to intellectual engagement, which is another reason why a personalised approach is important to me. As a university tutor and researcher, I am deeply passionate about my subjects and hope to kindle a similar interest and passion in students. However, I also understand that not everybody has the same interests and am more than capable of providing that last push over the line for an exam in an unloved subject too. I have taught at the University of Edinburgh for 3+ years, including postgraduate students and would be open to tutor GCSE or university students, adjusting my lessons to student needs. Lessons would normally be 1 or 2 hours. In a first session, I would like to get an understanding of how to best support the student and then work with that going forward. Having marked university assessments myself, I know exactly what high-achieving work looks like and how to get there!
