About Shelby

I graduated with High Distinction from the University of Toronto, Trinity College in 2020 where I majored in Ethics, Society and Law, and pursued a double minor in Anthropology and Sociology. During my B.A., I achieved Dean's List standing each year and had two essays published in addition to working part-time and being involved with multiple extra-curriculars.

A year later, I began at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law where I am scheduled to graduate in June 2024. In law school, I have successfully competed in oral advocacy competitions and have coached others in the same. Moreover, my success in law school enabled me to secure a position as a 2024 Litigation Associate for a top law firm located in New York City in addition to other wonderful opportunities.

I am also a very proud "cat mom" to two rescue cats, Primrose and Theodore. I enjoy trying new food, travelling, exploring, scary movies, and binge-watching the odd T.V. show.

I will establish a comfortable and supportive environment where you are encouraged to ask questions, make mistakes, and fine-tune your "voice".

I am committed to helping you become an effective thinker and communicator. With tutoring, we will deal directly with mindset ("brain training"), knowledge base, and application with a focus on written and oral communication skills.

Written communication skills are essential and often overlooked. Great writing generally results in better grades, opportunities, and work products. As such, I am committed to providing substantive knowledge guidance, direct edits (e.g., grammar, paragraph structure, flow, equivocation, tense, etc.) and detailed feedback and comments on your work. I aim to help you better understand the edits that I made and begin to learn and internalize good writing habits. In essence, I will teach you how to think more effectively such that you are better able to form and communicate meaningful ideas.

Moreover, I will review the structure of the work product, ensure that perspectives/arguments are correctly cited, evidence is used to support a statement, and that you effectively communicate "why" the reader should care about what you have said.

I am best suited to tutor students at the Undergraduate (University and College) and High School level. I am also best equipped to edit papers at these levels. I can also assist individuals with preparing application materials for Undergraduate study or Graduate/Professional Study (e.g., law school applications, personal statements, cover letters, etc.).

Details

For tutoring, I recommend intervals of 1 hour to dive into the material and make meaningful headway.

Concerning essay editing, the amount of hours needed to edit a piece of writing will depend on the nature of the paper (i.e., the subject matter and length). If you would prefer I limit edits to 1-2 hours, I am happy to stop there and revert the edits to you at that point.
