Violin lessons from the leader of the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and first violin at the musical, Hamilton

Methodology

My teaching is completely tailored to every player, and varies a great deal according to every player’s goals, their personality, musical strengths, and the amount of time we have to work together

I’m just as happy to working with students, amateurs or professionals.

My technical approach is based on my Russian professor at the Royal College Of Music, Felix Andrievsky.

Experience

I am a freelance orchestral leader, appearing as concertmaster of symphony orchestras internationally, and a chamber-player and recording session musician based in London. Formerly I was Principal First Violin at the RPO and leader of the Tippett Quartet. I enjoy working with violinists at every level and any age.

Patrick's CV

Australian-born and now living in London, Patrick Savage was Principal First Violin in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London for several years, and continues to regularly lead the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. Patrick is now a free-lance concertmaster, soloist, session player and West End musician. As guest concertmaster, he has worked with many orchestras including the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Liverpool Philharmonic, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and in recordings for Chandos. He is a member of the Australian World Orchestra, and regularly leads the Senbla Orchestra in London, leading touring orchestras for Burt Bacharach, Quincy Jones and many others.

As a soloist Patrick has appeared with many orchestras in the UK including the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Young Musicians’ Symphony Orchestra, the RCM Symphony, the London Soloists Chamber Orchestra and the English Soloists Ensemble. Patrick has also appeared in the Wigmore Hall as finalist in the 1999 Young Concert Artist Trust auditions and his playing has featured on BBC Radio 2 and 3. His recitals have featured a wide and varied repertoire and have included programs of the first 12 Paganini Caprices.

For several years he was the leader of the Tippett String Quartet, an ensemble acclaimed by the Daily Telegraph in London as promising to make “a significant contribution to the realms of chamber music”. The Tippett Quartet especially championed contemporary composers, undertaking many world premieres and appearing regularly at the Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room in London.

Patrick was born in Melbourne in 1976 and commenced violin lessons at the age of four, studying with Elizabeth Dommett in Canberra and then Donald Scotts in Melbourne performing his solo debut with orchestra at the Music in the Round Festival in 1989, he became a regular soloist on Australian stages, also featuring in television and radio broadcasts.

As student at the VCASS and VCA in Melbourne, he was the recipient of several awards including a scholarship to the Tanglewood Music Center, Massachusetts, in 1993. The following year he received a fellowship from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, which enabled him to study with Dr Felix Andrievsky at the Royal College of Music in London. He graduated from the RCM with first class honours and many accolades including the inaugural Yehudi Menuhin Award.

As a chamber musician he was a Leverhulme Fellow at the Royal Academy of music as leader of the Archinto String Quartet and then a Junior Fellow at the Royal College of Music with the Trio Belle Epoque.

He has given masterclasses to violin students at the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Conservatory of Music at Melbourne University and the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne.
