About Yohane-Liam

I'm a violinist, multi-instrumentalist and composer whose performance styles range from classical to jazz and contemporary music as a live and session musician. I studied a BMus in music at Newcastle University from 2015-2019 before developing my arrangement and composition skills as a classical music intern for a major, west London parish church and studying a masters in theology continuing my research on church music. As part of my work I play large events and festivals throughout the UK as a violinist and drummer. As a composer have written live arrangements for audiences ranging from 5-15,000 people, including 2 orchestrations played in the Royal Albert Hall (once in 2023 and a return in 2024).

My role as a teacher is to show students how to practise well throughout the week so that they can reach their full potential and experience the joys of sustained improvement at each lesson. In this way students get to develop skills in this area that will carry over to the rest of their lives. As somebody who grew up learning music in an area with little connection to the wider world of music education I also make sure my students are informed and prepared to be able to access wider performance opportunities that will accelerate their learning, for example, by linking them to appropriate ensembles and music hubs they are ready to join. Each lesson we will look at technique, aural and theory skills and musical expression in a way that allows the student to enjoy the music making process as well as preparing for any exams they may want to take. As someone with 8 distinctions in the violin from ABRSM grade 1-8 in less than 6 years I know what it takes to arrive to exams fully prepared to succeed. I teach most age groups including privately with adults and in a high school setting. In each lesson for young beginners to casual adult professionals we'll look at essential technique, listening, theory and musicianship so that each student is set up to practise and develop with confidence. Lessons typically take place at the student's home and it's recommended, if possible, for parents of younger students to be present at lessons to take notes and understand what their child is practising during the week. If we haven't already met we'll spend our first lesson finding out your goals and aspirations for your instrument, evaluating your current skill level in technique, theory and musicality, and ensuring that you have the tools you need (e.g. instrument, accessories, books etc) to succeed. My main teaching areas are in Merton, Kensington and Chelsea, Euston and locations within a walking distance from the Northern (Morden to Euston), Victoria (Brixton to Kings X) and District/Circle (Wimbledon to Westminster/High St Kensington) Lines. If you fall slightly out of these areas e.g. Wandsworth, Streatham, Croydon, still be sure to get in touch because I may be teaching nearby on certain days of the week, or able to teach at my home.
