About Laurel
I invest in my students. I'm known for bringing out the best in my students by assessing their overall study skills, their strengths, and their struggles. It can be hard for a classroom teacher to individualize plans for students. I was a classroom teacher at a private preschool. I taught the 5-year-old class. I learned very quickly why students can fall behind. I went on to change my major from teaching to Cultural Anthropology. Taking linguistics gave me a new perspective on language and communication. Now, I take personal and cultural background into account when I form lessons. I am more aware of struggles such as learning disabilities. I went on to be a private tutor with a successful company for over 5 years. Many of my students stayed with me for years. I helped students go from being months behind to graduating. I was able to build confidence and skills together. Many of my students exceeded the expectations of their teachers and schools in any subject that I helped them. I want people who choose me to succeed!

Hello!
A typical lesson will look like a warm-up reading and writing exercise at a student's current level. Then, we will work through our specific lesson plan working towards an overall goal. If a younger student is learning how to read, that may look like focusing on certain sounds, the letters that compose that sound, and words with that sound. If an older student is learning how to write longer papers, we may do a one-paragraph warm-up writing exercise on a subject. Then, we will work through the lesson plan that I've developed for that particular student. If they need to work on sentence and paragraph structure, that may look like diagramming games and paragraph examples. If they need to work on vocabulary, that may look like word games and reading more advanced passages together. If it looks like connecting ideas, we may discuss outlines and make one surrounding a base thesis. If they are struggling with researching, we could talk about factually supporting arguments, how often you need citations, the difference between opinion and fact, etc. Overall, language is comprised of multi-faceted communication. I feel like I find new, interesting, and fun ways to work with students at any level and any age.
