About Margaret

My love for reading and writing led me to study English at Yale as an undergrad and go on to complete a PhD at UCSB. I've spent over two decades teaching and tutoring students across all levels -- from middle school, high school, and college to graduate and professional writers.

Through online coaching, I've had the opportunity to work with students and writers not only from the United States but also all over the world, teaching students from North and South America, Europe, India, Asia, and Australia. (One of my most exciting moments teaching an online class was watching students from across the US, Mexico, Chile, London, Amsterdam, and Cairo connect all at once!)

Writing can often feel overwhelming. I specialize in helping you break down complex assignments into clear, manageable steps so that you can gain confidence, develop your original voice, and find lasting success.

About the lesson

Tailored 1-on-1 Writing and Literature Coaching

Whether you need to refine a single project or build lifelong writing confidence, my sessions provide clear, practical strategies tailored to your exact goals.

How I Can Help You:
--Developing Core Ideas & Arguments: Brainstorming, planning, outlining, and defining thesis statements
--Structuring & Organizing: Building connections between one idea and the next and structuring complex paragraphs
--Polishing and Refining: Correcting grammar, tightening wordy phrasing, improving your vocabulary, and elevating your style and tone, without losing your voice

Who I Work With:
--Students (Middle School, High School, College): analytical essays, research papers, lab reports, personal essays
--Applicants to high school, college, and grad school: develop and polish your admissions essay
--Graduate and Professional: academic articles, papers, and executive business communications

What to Expect in a Session:
Every session is customized to your needs. We start by reviewing your current draft (or notes or bullet points), identify next steps for focus, and work together to build strategies so that you develop your own methodology for future projects.

When I was applying to Columbia’s MS in Data Science program, I was looking for someone with experience helping students apply to Ivy League schools who could review my Statement of Purpose. Maggie helped me tremendously in organizing my ideas and, most importantly, shaping the story I wanted to tell. It was important to me that my essay not only reflected my academic background, but also explained why I wanted to join the program, what I hoped to contribute, and why I was a strong candidate. Maggie asked the right questions, identified the parts of my story that were worth highlighting, and helped me turn my ideas into a much clearer, more personal, and compelling essay. Her feedback made a huge difference in my application, and I would absolutely recommend working with her to anyone applying to competitive programs.
