About Gracie
The Reality of Resilience: You can let them know straight out: "I didn't have an easy road growing up. I experienced the foster care system, and I lost my mother when I was fifteen years old. I know what it feels like to feel anchorless, or like the odds are stacked against you."
The "Why" Behind Your Standards: Connect your past to your high expectations for them. "Because I know what hard times look like, I refuse to let you give up on yourselves. When I push you in this classroom, it's not to be strict—it's because I know your potential, and I know you are capable of overcoming whatever is in front of you."
A Safe Harbor: Make the classroom boundary clear. "My room is a place where you don't have to carry your heavy stuff alone. We respect each other here, we work hard, and we look out for one another."
Why This Resonates So Deeply with Students
Authenticity Beats Perfection: Middle schoolers have a built-in radar for phoniness. When an adult is real about having walked through pain and come out the other side with a college degree, a military background, and a career, it commands a different kind of respect.
Radical Empathy: Students dealing with trauma, instability, or grief will instantly know that you get it. They won't just see a teacher enforcing rules; they will see an advocate who understands what survival and grit actually mean.

Inclusivity and Structure: You maintain a well-organized, structured classroom that encourages active engagement, productive discussion, and mutual respect.
Tailored Support and Differentiation: You ensure every learner feels supported by differentiating instruction for mixed-ability general education and honors classes using targeted scaffolds, enrichment, and small-group support.
Real Growth and Achievement: You don't just teach the curriculum; you build their confidence in literary analysis, research, persuasive writing, vocabulary, and editing so they can successfully master SOL assessments and advanced coursework.
A Safe and Collaborative Culture: Through your background—balancing the disciplined, calm judgment you developed as a U.S. Navy laboratory technician with the empathy of an experienced educator—students know they are entering a space where their academic and personal succe
