My aim is always to work with students strengths and so when I begin working with an individual or a group I spend the first session (or couple of sessions, if necessary) looking at previous work or carrying out a few games and simple exercises to establish an understanding of what the student CAN do and their individual style of learning. Having become familiar with a students style and confidences I will share my observations with the student and we will discuss how we can use these strengths to improve confidence and ability in specific areas. Depending on our aims I will develop a longer term plan which ensures we can meet specific aims within our time frame but within that structure I tend to find we need some flexibility in regards to what we do in each session. Some students wish to focus on a specific piece of work in our sessions, sometimes we are looking at a whole topic and I aim to provide a wide range of resources and approaches that supports the students aim. My experience is in Secondary school intervention and I have worked with hundreds of students on both personal and academic concerns to improve their grades and make learning enjoyable and achievable. I have had excellent outcomes across a number of schools and abilities in GCSE Science, Maths, Design Technology. My main teaching subject, about which I have a depth of knowledge beyond the syllabus, is English Literature.
I am an English Literature Student with the long term goal of training as an English teacher. Prior to University I spent ten years as a senior Pastoral and Intervention Coordinator in Secondary schools in the North East of England. My key role has been to work with students, parents and senior teachers to devise and deliver GCSE and Key Stage 3 Intervention, mostly in English but also Maths, Science and Design Technology, with the specific goal of improving personal and academic outcomes for individual students. More broadly, my role included the coordination of whole school strategy in relation to exam results.
