About DeShawn
I've been playing music for over 20 years, spending 12 of them in orchestra from age 8 through 20. That foundation in ensemble performance is where my music theory knowledge was built on, not from a textbook alone, but from applying it in real time alongside other musicians where every note and every interval had to be right.
I hold a B.S. in Audio Production from Full Sail University and have worked professionally in music for years, including as a sync licensing agent and audio engineer. Outside of theory, I also hold a B.A. in Psychology and have taught at a school for children with autism, which shapes how I teach. I adapt to how you learn, not just what you're learning.
Theory clicked for me when it connected to sound. That's the experience I aim to give every student.

Most music theory courses teach you rules. Most ear training courses teach you exercises. Neither one teaches you how they connect, and that's why so many students plateau.
My lessons build both skills together. You'll develop an ear that doesn't guess at notes but is strong and understands how the notes connect to each other, one that hears a note, finds the root, and knows where it sits in the scale. And you'll understand the theory behind why it works, not just that it does. That combination gives you something most students never get: musical instinct backed by real understanding.
