About Emily
After 20 years as a classroom teacher in a NYC private school, I am excited about the opportunity to work one-to-one with individual students. I offer remote tutoring and/or homework help to students in grades 2-5 in the following subjects: reading, writing, word study, grammar, math.
In consultation with a family, I can also construct a summer learning plan to help a child maintain learned skills and preview upcoming skills.
As a highly skilled writer and editor, I am also available to work with older students on their essay writing skills (including, but not limited to, admissions essays).
Teaching was a second career for me. My first was as an attorney (Yale Law School Class of '94).
I taught third grade for 15 years and fourth grade for 3, but I started my teaching career in second grade. I also worked in the middle school homework help center, primarily with 5th graders.

The first step is to meet with the student's parents to get an understanding of their goals, as well as to gain some insight into their child's interests, strengths, and challenges.
Next I create a proposed learning plan and, if the parents are interested in continuing, I meet with the child in a low stakes, get aquainted session.
I have worked with a wide variety of learners, and am comfortable providing reinforcement and support, as well as extension activities.
