About Emmett

Hey! My name is Emmett, and I’m an ASL instructor pursuing an M.A. in Teaching American Sign Language. I am committed to helping students increase their confidence and abilities in ASL.

I currently teach ASL I and II at the high school level while pursuing graduate studies in ASL education, language-teaching pedagogy, curriculum development, assessment, ASL linguistics, and Deaf culture. By combining my teaching experience and graduate studies, I can tutor you using real-world teaching experience and research-backed instructional methods.

As a Deaf ASL educator, I also use my own experiences and ties to the Deaf community in my teaching. ASL is more than just learning individual signs. To truly learn the language, you must also understand the grammar, visual nature, and cultural context of the language, as well as the Deaf community that uses it.

The process of acquiring a second language can be overwhelming. Learning to communicate visually with your hands, face, and body in new ways can make the experience even more difficult! I aim to provide a safe, supportive learning environment where you can ask questions, make mistakes, and practice without feeling embarrassed as you build confidence.

Whether you are starting from scratch or just looking for extra help with an ASL class you are already taking, I will meet you where you are and help you keep moving forward.

My ASL lessons are meant to help you actually communicate in American Sign Language—not just memorize lists of words.

Instead of only talking about how things work, I show you. I demonstrate signs and structures, give you lots of chances to practice, and adjust my feedback to fit your learning needs. Depending on what you want to focus on, we can work on vocabulary, fingerspelling, numbers, ASL grammar, facial expressions, receptive skills, expressive signing, or aspects of Deaf culture.

Usually, we start each lesson by quickly reviewing what you learned last time, then move into new material or practice. I’ll model signs and how to use them in sentences, give you time to try them out, and offer feedback on things like handshape, movement, palm orientation, use of space, facial expressions, and grammar. As you get more comfortable, we shift from guided practice to using ASL more freely and naturally.

A bit about me: I teach high school ASL and am finishing a graduate degree in Teaching American Sign Language. I base my lessons on how people really learn languages, not just on repeating signs. I believe making mistakes is completely normal—and actually necessary—when learning a language. I want you to feel comfortable trying, asking questions, and practicing until things click.

I can adjust lessons for total beginners, current ASL students who want some extra help, or anyone looking to sharpen certain skills. Whether you’re learning ASL for school, prepping for a test, tackling tough grammar, or just want to get better at signing, we can focus on what matters most to you.

Most importantly, I want ASL lessons to be fun, supportive, and challenging in a good way. My goal is to help you really understand ASL as a language and build your confidence as a signer.
