About Steven
For over 20 years, composing, performing, recording, and learning about music has been my passion. I began first as a self-taught musician, learning how to play the drum-set by listening to records. I eventually learned how to play the piano, guitar, bass guitar and ukulele. I became interested in the field of ethnomusicology and branched out, taking lessons in a variety of world music instruments, such as the tabla set in Hindustani traditional classical music, the talking drum in West African percussion music and the berimbau performed in Brazilian samba, incorporating these styles and rhythms in my composition. I have been involved in education for over 10 years, leading individual students and small musical ensembles in preparation for school events and performances. I am currently the music program director for a company that offers afterschool musical enrichment for charter and public schools located in Los Angeles.

Every person has the capacity to learn how to play an instrument. I teach students how to be self-sufficient musicians by laying out the fundamentals of music, including pitch, scales, rhythm, melody, and chords, while also focusing on the beginner techniques necessary for mastery of knowledge with each instrument.
- First beginner lessons for drum-set: names of parts on drum-set, matched vs. traditional grip, reading drum-set rhythms on sheet music, beginner drum rudiments (paradiddles, flams, drags).
