About Derek
Derek Green II is an essayist, poet, author, and passionate English educator, currently teaching at a local high school. With a deep commitment to nurturing student voices, Derek believes in starting where each student is—guiding them to elevate their expression through patient, thoughtful instruction. Their teaching blends literary analysis, historical context, and student-led discussion to create dynamic, insightful classroom experiences. Outside the classroom, Derek Green is the author of The Great King's Tale, the first novel in an upcoming fantasy series that draws richly from African and Indigenous cultures to build a vibrant, immersive world. As both an educator and creative writer, Derek brings a unique, real-world perspective to the study of literature, helping students not only analyze great works but also find the power in their own words.

My approach begins with you. I believe every student has a unique voice, and my goal is to nurture and refine that voice to an elevated level of clarity and expression. I foster a patient, thoughtful atmosphere where students feel confident exploring complex ideas, and where discussion is not just encouraged—it’s essential.
A Typical Lesson Plan
Each class begins by grounding the literature in its historical and biographical context—understanding the time and the author gives depth to their work. From there, we dive into student-led analysis: What moves you? What challenges you? We examine how your own lens influences your understanding of a text. And always, we recognize the important distinction between the creator and the creation.
What Sets Me Apart
As a published essayist, author, and poet, I bring a real-world understanding of language as art. My background allows me to help students not only read literature but also write with sophistication and intention. My classes inspire students to think critically, write powerfully, and speak with confidence.
