About Emmett
Emmett P. Walsh is a writer, director, and screenwriting tutor who believes great storytelling consists of equal parts craft, instinct, and life experience. A finalist in Final Draft’s Big Break Competition, his scripts have garnered recognition from the Los Angeles International Screenplay Awards, Launch Pad, and Roadmap Writers. With a Master’s in Political Philosophy and a diverse background covering comedy, film development, and on-set production, he brings a well-rounded and engaging approach to teaching the art of screenwriting. Whether breaking down structure, refining dialogue, or exploring what makes a story resonate, Emmett tailors each lesson to the individual, making complex concepts accessible through pop culture references, interactive discussions, and hands-on feedback. His diverse life experiences—including time on the New York underground comedy circuit, work as an NBC Page, and even an accidental funeral crash—provide him with a unique perspective on storytelling and mentorship. He is passionate about helping students discover their creative voice and believes that with the right tools and mindset, anyone can transform their ideas into a compelling screenplay. Whether you're a beginner or refining your craft, Emmett offers a supportive, insightful, and entertaining learning experience.

Storytelling lies at the core of everything we do—whether in movies, books, or merely sharing tales with friends. My goal as a screenwriting tutor is to guide students in tapping into that instinct and transforming their ideas into compelling, structured narratives. I believe learning should be interactive, engaging, and, most importantly, tailored to each individual. Everyone processes information differently, so I employ a mix of pop culture references, real-world analogies, and Socratic questioning to make complex concepts approachable and intuitive. Beyond merely teaching the mechanics of screenwriting, I aim to instill confidence in my students and help them cultivate their own creative voice.
What sets me apart? A lifetime of diverse experiences. I’ve written an award-winning script, swum with sharks, climbed mountains, and—yes—accidentally crashed a funeral. My background brings a unique perspective to my teaching, helping students view storytelling through fresh and unexpected angles. Screenwriting isn’t just about structure and format; it’s about life, perspective, and having something meaningful to say.
My lessons are tailored for anyone of high school age and older with a passion for storytelling. Whether you’re new to screenwriting or honing your skills, my objective is to provide you with the tools and confidence to bring your ideas to life on the page.

- Brief discussion on the previous lesson’s key takeaways.
- Answer any lingering questions or challenges from the last session.
Student Work Review (30-40 min)
- The student shares either new pages or revisions of their script.
- I provide structured, constructive feedback, always encouraging and providing solutions.
- If in a group setting, I moderate peer feedback to keep it positive, productive, and focused.
Mini Lesson: Writing Tools & Techniques (10-15 min, time permitting)
- A short discussion on a useful screenwriting concept—dialogue tricks, pacing techniques, structuring emotional payoffs, etc.
- Interactive examples and exercises to apply the concept in real-time.
Wrap-up & Next Steps (5 min)
- Setting goals for the next session.
- Answer any final questions.
Every class is adaptable—some students thrive on structure, others need more free-flowing creativity, and I tailor my approach accordingly. My goal is simple: help students become better, more confident writers while making the process fun and engaging.
Let’s tell some great stories together.
