About William

My name is William Newell and I'm a biologist, with over four years of teaching experience. As a scientist, I have witnessed the importance of secondary education in science. I believe that education is critical in securing future generations of highly-skilled individuals and personally credit the excellent teaching that I received for starting my scientific career. I think my perspective allows me to bring much-needed context into lessons, and I have been praised in the past for instilling some of my passion for the subject into my students.

I started out tutoring when I was at the University of Manchester, studying a Master's in Biological Sciences. Here, I tutored students after-school in GCSE and A-level biology and chemistry. I also worked as a student representative, assisting new postgraduate and undergraduate students adapt to a new academic environment.

After graduating, I turned to tutoring full-time and worked for 2 of London's top agencies, Enjoy Education and Bonas McFarlane. During this time I expanded my clientele to cover a significant number of A-level homeschooling and intensive revision positions, a challenge which I relished. I realised that I had a passion for explaining complex subject matters in Biology, and so began tutoring students in first year medical school exams as part of the Rahab charity. I also worked as part of the charity Action Tutoring, offering GCSE mathematics and English support to students in disadvantaged areas.

In the autumn of 2019, I began a 9 month research project at the Max Planck Institute in Berlin, Germany. Alongside a busy work schedule, I ran regular tutoring sessions for small groups of students from English-speaking schools in the area, focusing on IB Biology. At the same time, I tutored several students in IB and IGCSE at the International School in Berlin. I returned to London in June to work on a research project, where I remain working today.

I take a flexible but exam-based approach to my tuition, uniting both the academic needs of the student with the interest in the subject I believe is so important to doing well. In longer term tuition, such as general support throughout the year, I focus on patching up errors in understanding before they grow into more serious gaps in knowledge. In shorter term revision sessions, I focus on placing the broad concepts of the subject in an understandable frame while targeting specific aspects of exam technique. I can bring both a broad knowledge and specific experience with exam technique to bear in order to support students at any point in their education.
