I'm Josh, a chemistry PhD student at the University of Bristol, who also obtained a masters degree in chemistry from the University of Oxford. I've always enjoyed science, but it was during the early stages at a-level that I knew I wanted to focus on chemistry. I find it awesome to be able to explain what is happening when you freeze water, or why your fried chicken doesn't stick to your non-stick frying pan!
Over the past few years, I've supervised masters students with their final year projects, really enjoying the process of seeing them grow as a chemist. This has involved teaching them new skills and techniques as well as helping them understand the chemistry they are performing. I want to translate my enjoyment of chemistry to those earlier on in the learning process. I consider myself patient, considerate and welcoming.
The key to success is in gaining a solid basic understanding of a topic, such that we can apply that knowledge to any question. Once we establish that understanding I will look to apply that with the use of past exam questions. In my own development past exam questions have been a key way that I have tested my knowledge of a subject from GCSE through to my final university exam.
Last of all, I want to make sure we keep the sessions enjoyable (a lot of exciting chemistry and physics can be found on the internet!), to help make learning that much more enjoyable.
If you have any queries please ask away or arrange a meet the tutor session with me so we can chat some more. Hope to be in touch soon!
This is all about your needs as a tutee. I aim for my sessions to be tailored towards the individual and target their learning style to make sure you get the most out of a session. By giving me as much detail with what you are struggling with as possible, I can structure it to be the most effective.
