About Mac
My experience as a Teaching Assistant for my geology professor sparked a passion for science communication and set me on my current career path at The Franklin Institute of Philadelphia. In my role at the museum, I engage learners of all ages and specialize in making scientific concepts accessible, engaging, and exciting.
I believe everyone should have the opportunity to feel confident in STEM. My goal as a tutor is to make challenging subjects less intimidating by connecting complex ideas to concepts students already understand, encouraging curiosity, and helping them develop the confidence to think scientifically.

My teaching approach centers on purposeful questioning and connecting new concepts to prior knowledge, helping students build a strong and intuitive understanding of the material. This approach is particularly effective in science, where many concepts involve identifying patterns and using them to develop broader explanations of the world around us.
Lessons typically revolve around an interactive central activity tailored to the student’s current coursework, assignments, and learning goals. Throughout the session, I use frequent concept checks to identify and address misunderstandings as they arise. I also incorporate visual diagrams and illustrations, drawing on my fine arts training to make complex ideas more accessible and memorable.
Each lesson concludes with a brief teach-back, giving the student an opportunity to explain the key concepts in their own words. This reinforces learning while allowing me to confirm understanding and identify any areas that may benefit from further practice.

Mac is a warm, welcoming, and experienced tutor with a serious passion for geology and environmental science. He is especially skilled at breaking down complex topics, and providing the necessary context for both the how and why of natural earth science. Despite my lack of experience in the field, he was able to meet me where I was and explain difficult processes step by step.
