I believe that the best way to teach is to communicate, using clear and exciting examples to illuminate the topic at hand and show its connections to other subjects and the outside world. We live in a diverse world, and it's important to reflect that diversity in the sources we use.
I believe in using a variety of sources to help teach, ranging from films, to books, to music clips. This is particularly important in the context of pupils with LS needs, as a focus on one kind of source can impact the pupil's experience, and hinder their success.
My lessons are based on a core Learning Objective, changing from lesson to lesson with the curriculum. Around that, there will be a series of case studies, examples, and anecdotes, with personalised support for exam answers if required. Half the battle with the humanities is ensuring that good ideas are communicated well, and that the drama and beauty of those ideas can be unpacked for the student. I seek to teach English and support the development of those communication skills to ensure that the pupil's ability is reflected, and that they derive enjoyment from their academic work.
With experience of studying in the British and American school systems (GCSE, AP, Cambridge Pre-U, and A-Levels), and with experience of both working in the media, teaching, and undergraduate and postgraduate study, I believe I can offer a unique and effective perspective on studying English language, literature, and writing.
Having done my Undergrad at Cambridge (where I was an academic Exhibitioner, student journalist, and debater), I worked as a teacher and pastoral tutor at a boarding school for a year, gaining experience of both in person and online learning. In search of a new challenge, I returned to Scotland in August 2020 to start postgraduate work at Edinburgh University.
Outside of the classroom I'm a keen reader, hillwalker, and writer- I try to communicate this love for the written word and natural world in my work, using examples from literature and general culture to illustrate concepts.
If you want to see me in action, there is a video clip of a debate I spoke in -alongside the Shadow Foreign Secretary and a former US Cabinet Secretary- back in 2018. My speech begins at 14:07.

I've known Lewis since we started University together. Lewis is friendly, hardworking , and - importantly as a tutor - a fantastic historian. His depth and breadth of historical knowledge is exceptional, and he has a great ability to share this knowledge by clearly explaining the concepts, stories and ideas. Therefore, a student tutored by Lewis would not only learn a lot in a short space of time, but enjoy it as well.
I have known Lewis for several years, having studied at Cambridge together and kept in touch as he went on to work in Education and begin his Postgraduate studies. Lewis is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about his subject, has wonderful experience as a teacher, and is both diligent and very warm. Lewis is devoted to supporting each of his students as individual learners and as people, and I could not recommend him enough as a tutor.
